February 15-16, 2013

Prize Winners

Grand Prize Winners:

First Prize: Icom IC-7410
Winner: Judith "Jutti" Marsh (K6FRG), Los Angeles, California

Jutti is fairly new to Amateur Radio, and originally got her license because she was a member of a community CERT team. But she went to a field day site and got hooked, soon getting her general license and is studying for her extra class ticket. Now that she owns an expensive HF transceiver, she may be on the air more. Two ARRL section managers had to help hold up the heavy prize for the photo.

Second Prize: Kenwood TS-2000
Winner: Paulette Sill (WL7WB), Juneau, Alaska

Paulette and her husband did not stay for the BBQ dinner, but returned to their temporary winter home in Welton, a few miles east of Yuma. When she got the call about being the winner of the TS-2000, she quickly returned to Yuma the next morning and picked it up.

Third Prize: Elecraft K3 100W Kit
Winner: Laura "Kate" Hutton (K6HTN), Pasadena, California

Kate was one of our seminar presenters, having given a seminar on the National Traffic System (NTS) on Saturday morning. Kate is the ARRL Los Angeles Section Traffic Manager and is very actively involved in Amateur Radio. She also owns a K3 already.

Fourth Prize: FlexRadio FLEX-3000

Julie is not a ham, but is married to one. Julie is an active volunteer with the Yuma Hamfest, working in the event's Hospitality area all during the hamfest. Her husband Hal has acted as our hamfest photographer for several years.

Sixth Prize: Yaesu FTM-350AR
Winner: Tom Wise II (KI6SJB), Brawley, California

Tom left before the dinner and returned home to Brawley, seventy miles to the west. Tom works with his father in a family radio business, Wise Electronics, which sells, maintains and repairs commercial two-way radios.

Seventh Prize: Kenwood TM-D710A
Winner: Bill Baird (KF7VE), Yucaipa, California

Bill was first licensed as a Novice in May 1988 as KB7FEB while living in Tucson and upgraded to Technician a couple of months later. He became KF7VE in 1989, getting his Extra license a few years later. Bill came to the Yuma Hamfest, and after winning the Kenwood APRS mobile rig, is probably really glad he did.

Eighth Prize: Icom ID-880H D-STAR mobile
Winner: Bill Timme (N9NNN), Portage, Wisconsin

Bill was in Yuma instead of Wisconsin because the temperatures here are little higher than home. Enjoy your experience with D-Star, Bill.

Ninth Prize: Yaesu FT-7900R mobile
Winner: Nick Rodillas (N6RND), Moreno Valley, California

First licensed in 1955 in his native state of Hawaii, Nick is a retired educator, having served 41 years in public education. Nick is a DX chaser and also enjoys operating QRP. The Yaesu dual-band mobile he won also included the head separation kit.

Tenth Prize: Icom IC-80AD D-STAR handheld
Winner: Don Petersen (VE5WT), Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan

Don is from a tiny Canadian village called Rabbit Lake, which has a population less than most city blocks, but enjoys his winters here in Yuma. A D-Star handheld will be a great addition to Don's ham radio gear.

Eleventh Prize: Yaesu VX-8GR handheld
Winner: Susan Loeser (KD7IWI), Yuma, Arizona

Susan is one of our hamfest volunteers, and spent two days selling our commemorative hamfest T-shirts. Enjoy the fancy new handheld, Susan, and if you get lost, it has a built-in GPS.

Twelfth Prize: Hi-Q 3/80 RT Antenna
Winner: Art Schipper (K6ALS), Benicia, California

Art was visiting the area and attended the Yuma Hamfest, but did not stay for the BBQ dinner and the prize drawings. His antenna prize is being shipped to him directly from Hi-Q.

Thirteenth Prize: LDG AT-100ProII Antenna Tuner
Winner: Mike Rees (KD7CVJ), Las Vegas, Nevada

Retired US Navy, Mike is now a full-time RVer. Mike did not stay for the hamfest dinner and prize drawings, but was still in the area and picked up his antenna tuner prize Sunday morning.

Fourteenth Prize: Yaesu FT-60R handheld
Winner: Robert Sidebottom (K0LQB), Yuma, Arizona

A Yuman, Robert is now medically retired and loves his time with amateur radio. Robert was one of the founders of Yuma's Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS).

Congratulations, Paula, on winning a dual-band handheld VHF/UHF radio.

Helen is from Yuma and a nurse. She won the first prize we drew (we start with number 16 and work our way up the list). Helen is married to the new ARRL Section Manager for Arizona.

Admission Prize Winner:

Admission Prize: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Android Tablet
Winner: Al Herrle (KA3UPY), Hobe Sound, Florida

Al and his wife were at the Yuma Hamfest but did not stay for the BBQ dinner and prize drawings. They were staying temporarily in an RV park up in Quartzsite, so the tablet computer was delivered to them there.

Other Prize Winners:

On Saturday, the main day of the hamfest, there were drawings every hour throughout the day. These winners had to be present to win. We gave away 60 door prizes. On Saturday night, following the Buzzard BBQ, 22 more door prizes were given away as the result of just attending the Yuma Hamfest BBQ. Nobody gives away as many prizes as the Yuma Hamfest. Nobody!
