2010 Yuma Hamfest
February 19-20, 2010

Prize Winners

Grand Prize Winners:

First Prize: Kenwood TS-2000 Transceiver
Winner: Robert Scheller (N6KE), Yuma, Arizona

Bob Scheller was the very surprised winner of the Kenwood TS-2000 base station. Bob is shown on the right, receiving the grand prize from 2010 Hamfest Director Richard Palaszynski. Buying those grand prize raffle tickets for six years finally paid off for Bob, a long time extra class ham! After the winning callsign and name was announced following our BBQ dinner, Bob walked quietly to the front stage with a grin on his face, the shock of winning quite evident. We wonder how long it took for the shock to wear off.

Second Prize: Icom IC-7200 Transceiver
Winner: Charles Waters (KB7WHC), Yuma, Arizona

Charles Waters was the winner of the Icom IC-7200 base station, our second prize in the Grand Prize package. Charles didn't stay for the BBQ dinner, and had to come back to the fairgrounds on Sunday to claim his prize. When he received the phone call Sunday morning, he let out a whoop and was probably grinning the rest of the day. Charles was especially excited about the 6-meter capability of the IC-7200 and will likely retire his old base station.

Third Prize: Kenwood TM-D710A APRS-Compatible Mobile Radio
Winner: Ros Putman (W7AK), Yuma, Arizona

Ros Putman won the popular Kenwood TM-D710A APRS-Compatible radio (right, accepting the prize from 2010 hamfest director Richard Palaszynski). Ros holds an amateur radio extra license and the vanity call W7AK. He is a serious DXer, but maybe Ros will now spend more time on the VHF/UHF bands. Ros and his wife Cathy own Foothills Shoes, which has been a major contributor of our door prizes each year.

Fourth Prize: Yaesu VX-8R Handheld Radio
Winner: Diane Hunt, Yuma, Arizona

Diane Hunt of Yuma, Arizona won the popular VX-8R handheld radio. Diane is not a ham, but is a huge supporter of the Yuma Hamfest and a member of its Board of Directors. She also organizes the Hospitality Area at the hamfest and is in charge of the many gift baskets we give away. There is a vicious rumor circulating that this radio might end up in the hands of her husband Roger. As yet, there is no evidence to support this allegation, but the hamfest is staying on top of this critical situation!

Fifth Prize: Hi-Q 3/80RT antenna
Winner: Clifford Hauser (KD6XH), Tucson, Arizona

Clifford Hauser, who lives in Tucson, was excited to win the nice looking Hi-Q 3/80RT screwdriver-style antenna. Clifford is on the right in the photo, accepting the prize from 2010 hamfest director Richard Palaszynski. Clifford is active in the Tucson Repeater Association and the Amateur Radio Council of Arizona (ARCA).

Sixth Prize: MFJ-269 antenna analyzer
Winner: Clifford Hauser (KD6XH), Tucson, Arizona

For the first time in the history of our hamfest, we had a duplicate winner for our grand prizes. Because most entrants in the drawing buy multiple tickets, a duplicate winner is very possible, but it had not happened before this year. Clifford had his wife Christine go up front to accept this prize, the first one we drew. After he won a second grand prize, Clifford was informed that if he won for a third time, the hamfest could no longer guarantee his personal safety from the other 200 hams in the room! Luckily, Clifford is well liked and lived to tell about his winning experience.

Registration Prize Winner:

Registration Drawing Prize: Garmin 255WT GPS
Winner: Steve Hooper (K7ACS), Yuma, Arizona

Steve Hooper, from Yuma, won the registration prize of a Garmin 255WT GPS navigation system. This prize is awarded every year just for attending the event.

Other Prize Winners:

On Saturday, the main day of the hamfest, there were drawings every hour throughout the day. These winners had to be present to win. On Saturday night, following the Buzzard Barbeque, over unclaimed door prizes and additional small prizes were given away as the result of just attending the Yuma Hamfest BBQ. Some of the winners appear below:
